RON THORNTON
EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS
This scholarship is named in honor of Ron Thornton, who was initiated into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1986. He exemplified the true ideal of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. Professionally, Brother Thornton was an accountant in the entertainment industry. He and his widow, Sister Patrice McConnell, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., were active supporters of the Sigma Zeta Council’s program and activities. Sister McConnell continues to support the Council’s scholarship efforts by raising funds to award two $1,000 scholarships annually to worthy high school and college students.
The Sigma-Zeta Council of Southern California is accepting applications for the Ron Thornton Education Scholarship. One high school senior and one college student from the Southern California area will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. An eligible applicant must be a high school senior or a college freshman, sophomore, or junior during the 2023-2024 academic year and hold a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. To apply for a scholarship, you must complete the application form, which includes responding to the essay question, submitting an official transcript, and submitting two letters of recommendation.
